I have a Pakistani Kashmiri heritage. And my background is in film studies. I’ve never been to Kashmir, which is where my family are originally from. I think that sort of intensifies the South Asian diaspora a little bit more because I wish I had more of a connection to my heritage. I come from a Muslim background and I think my mum really opened the door to what religion can mean to different people. She’s quite liberal in that sense and believes that if your heart is in the right place, then you’re doing something right and that’s kind of where I am spiritually and religiously. My answer to being asking ‘Where I come from’ depends on the situation. When people are interested in my experience, rather than; How am I in the UK; How are you British? -then that’s when I’m open.
