Highlights of 2025!
2025 was a year shaped by exhibitions, photography, and a continuing belief in culture, dialogue and care.
Professionally, I’ve been proud of James Hyman Gallery's art fair booths at Photo London, Treasure House, British Art Fair and the Lapada Fair. Treasure House was a particular highlight, bringing together major works by Edward Burra to coincide with Tate Britain's retrospective. In a challenging economy, meeting new collectors and clients has been encouraging, and I’m grateful to everyone who helped make these fairs such a success.
After more than twenty years representing Derrick Greaves, we now represent his estate. Curating “Derrick Greaves – Arts Worlds” at the Graves Art Gallery/Sheffield Museums was a real privilege. The response was enthusiastic and I hope that it leads to a long-overdue retrospective in 2027, to mark the centenary of his birth.
In photography, spending time with this year’s Centre for British Photography grant winners and learning more about their work has been one of the real pleasures of the year. Thank you to Ben Millar Cole, Magda Kuca, Sujata Setia and Aindreas Scholz for sharing your practice. Applications for the 2026 grants open in January.
I also enjoyed joining Frank Watson on The Sound of Photography on Resonance Radio to talk about my life in photography and choose some favourite pieces of music.
My thanks also to Graeme Farnell at museumsetc for inviting me to speak at the Karl Marx Memorial Library for the launch of "Poverty for Sale. Edith Tudor Hart in Britain". It was a chance to reflect on founding the Centre for British Photography, and on the importance of creating an open, safe space that celebrates diversity and offers thoughtful ways of countering the anger and extremism around us.
We were saddened by the deaths of two of Britian's greatest photographers, John Blakemore and Martin Parr. I was privileged to organise an evening celebrating John Blakemore’s life at @derbymuseums.
Finally, it was exciting to make further acquisitions for the Hyman Collection. These included large-scale works by Paul Graham and Richard Learoyd, a lightbox by Joy Gregory and works by Stuart Brisley and Corinne Day.
I would like to thank all those who have supported us this year and to wish you all a happy, stimulating and peaceful 2026
