Daniel Meadows and Martin Parr, June Street, Salford (1973)

The Hyman Collection includes the most comprehensive exhibition set of Daniel Meadows and Martin Parr's innovative collaborative project June Street, Salford (1973), comprising 17 framed exhibition prints and the hand-written draft of the flyer sent to each home.

Daniel Meadows and Martin Parr studied photography together at Manchester Polytechnic from 1970 to 1973 along with other distinguished photographers including Peter Fraser, Brian Griffin and Charlie Meecham. In 1972 during their summer holiday Daniel Meadows and Martin Parr both worked at the Butlin's Holiday Camp at Filey in Yorkshire shooting pictures for what became (in November that year) Butlin's By The Sea, the inaugural exhibition at Impressions Gallery of Photography, York.

At Filey the two photographers each had cameras and took their own photographs. However, the following year they decided to work collaboratively to photograph the residents of June Street in Salford, using a single tripod and the college Hasselblad, a jointly credited project in which who actually pressed the shutter had little relevance.

June Street was in Ordsall, an area that was scheduled for redevelopment. Meadows and Parr chose it in particular because it was one of the last streets to provide location exteriors for the nation's number one soap opera Coronation Street. From then on Granada TV would film all exteriors in its Quay Street studios on a newly constructed set. The idea that this way of representing the 'reality' of northern working class life would thenceforth survive only in fiction, was something that intrigued Meadows and Parr.

The pictures they produced were first published on BBC TV's regional evening magazine programme Look North (23 May 1973). The work was screened against an audio track of June Street residents discussing the life they were leaving behind.
