In 1937 Brandt experimented by making both a positive and a negative print of one of his nudes. Making a print in negative added a myseterious, surreal dimension. However, this does not appear to have been an experiment that Brandt pursued, except in the present print which again shows the subject of a reclining nude and once again presents her in negative.
It seems most likely that the present work dates from the mid 1970s when Brandt did several nudes on this beach in Sussex. However, the present work is also strikingly similiar to some positive prints taken on the same stretch of beach in 1957 such as East Sussex Coast (Perspective of Nudes, No. 47) in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
