In Speaking Likeness, Hutton writes of this picture:
"Actors ought to be the easiest to photograph, but it is just as difficult to steal a picture of an actor as of anybody else - perhaps more so because he is likely to be so camera-conscious. I was lucky enough to catch John Gielgud directing a play from the left wing of the stage, standing perfectly still but loaded with attention (p.28)
