"The Northern Quarter is a regenerated area of Manchester, between Piccadilly, Victoria and Ancoats, known for its hip independent shops, bars, cafes and music scene. Once the powerhouse of the Industrial Revolution and teeming with cotton mills and merchants' houses, the area fell into decline in the mid-20th century. Low rents in the area subsequently attracted creative industries and youth culture flourished. The Northern Quarter as a brand came into being as a 1990s gentrification project which saw derelict warehouses reincarnated as luxury apartments and old shops turned into bohemian businesses. It came as no surprise to see that Leonard Rich's knitwear, hosiery and lingerie shop with its lovely old signage had a new neighbour selling coffees next-door. The area's gritty edginess and idiosyncratic juxtapositions, textures, lines, grids and colour palette really appealed to us and we hope we'll find traces of these things when we return."
