One of Michael Landy’s major early works was entitled Market. This large-scale installation comprised market-stall stands, artificial grass and plastic bread-crates and was first presented in a disused warehouse in south London. This film still is taken from the accompanying video entitled Appropriation. 

The video shows grocers setting up their stalls and using plastic crates ‘borrowed’ from bread manufacturers as platforms for their produce. Landy images and the title "appropriation" draws attention to this change of use, an allusion to the artist's ability to transform materials as with Duchamp's ready-mades..
