'The graceful flying buttresses, though they look integral to the building, were built in the middle of the fourteenth century, 100 years after the Chapter House was built. The Great Council met here in 1257 and from 1352-1547 it was used as the House of Commons so the building has been called the 'cradle of all free parliaments'. After 1547 the House of Commons met in nearby St. Stephen's Chapel, in the Palace of Westminster, and the Chapter House was used to store State papers until 1866.' Paul Barkshire.
