Rosy Martin recalls that this photograph was part of Spence's "father work", which also linked to her work on illness. She believes that both Spence and her father were asthmatic. Martin and Spence both did work on their relationship with their fathers, in addition to their better-known work on thier mothers. Spence only did one session on her father, from which this image originates. Additionally Spence also did some still-life images to re-create memories of her father and some self-portraits with an asthma inhaler (including one that is also in the Hyman Collection).
We are grateful to Rosy Martin for her asistance in cataloguing this work. Rosy Martin, email to James Hyman, 24 August 2020.
