"Your fundraising programme and the launch of the centre has come at a good time. I have been developing some new work for 2023, exploring photography as a shelter and the ways in which one uses photography to hide, to meet or for sanctuary. Here, the willow tree is used as a metaphor for the photograph. It was taken using my bronica 6x6, at dusk, using an 8 second exposure time. I am under the tree. You can just make out my legs, to the left of centre."

Tom Lovelace is a London based artist, working across photography, performance and sculpture. Lovelace presents fluid environments and exhibition encounters, positioning the body at the centre of abstract languages and legacies. Collaboration and phenomenology are central to his practice. Underpinning themes of research encompass the collaborative histories of photography, theatre and the role of Minimalism within contemporary culture. As a Lecturer Lovelace works at the Royal College of Art, University for the Creative Arts and Glasgow School of Art.

Lovelace has previously been nominated for the Foam Paul Huf Award, Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize, Prix Pictet Award and the Infinity Award (International Center of Photography, New York). His books, Work Starts Here (2013), This way up (2016) and Bathers (2021) are held in the Tate Artist's Book Collection. Curatorial projects include Performing Dawns (2021), With Monochrome Eyes (2020), Rehearsing the Real (2019), Concealer (2018) and At Home She’s a Tourist (2017).


Lovelace studied Photography at the Arts University Bournemouth, receiving BA First Class Honours before studying at Goldsmiths College, University of London. As a lecturer Lovelace has delivered talks and workshops at the Royal Academy of the Arts (London), Tate Modern, The Photographers’ Gallery, Frieze Art Fair, Somerset House (London), The Victoria and Albert Museum, London Art Fair, World Photography Organisation, Grain Projects, Golden Thread Gallery (Belfast), London College of Communication, University of Wales, Southampton Solent University, Bristol University, London South Bank University, Arts University Bournemouth, Falmouth University, Derby University, University of Central Lancashire, Portsmouth University, Sheffield Hallam University, UCA Canterbury, UCA Farnham, UCA Rochester, Brighton University, Camberwell College of Arts, University of Westminster and Manchester School of Art.
