Robert Darch is a British artist-photographer based in the South West of England. He has published and exhibited widely and his photographs reside in public and private collections.
His practice is motivated by the experience of place, in which the physical geography and material cultures of places merge with impressions from contemporary culture that equally influence perception. From these varied sources, both real and imagined, he constructs narratives that help contextualise a personal response to place.
He holds an MFA with distinction in Photographic Arts and a MA with distinction in Photography & the Book from Plymouth University. He also has a BA with honours in Documentary Photography from Newport, Wales and is an associate lecturer in photography at Plymouth University.
Robert’s work was included in ‘Another Country’, British Documentary Photography since 1945, by Gerry Badger and published by Thames & Hudson. 'In Another Country', Badger collates some of the most significant British documentary works’ The Sunday Times.
Robert’s work is part of ‘Facing Britain’, curated by Ralph Goertz. The exhibition is a major touring retrospective of the last sixty years of British Documentary Photography. Facing Britain is also available as a book, distributed by Thames and Hudson in the UK.
In 2021 Robert exhibited his series, The Island in a collective show with Helen Sear, ‘Turn to Return’ as part of the inaugural Bristol Photo Festival.
In 2020 Martin Parr acquired 39 of Robert’s photographs for inclusion in the Martin Parr Foundation archive.
