Jo Spence in collaboration with Rosy Martin.
Rosy Martin recalls that this photograph was part of Spence's "father work", which also linked to her work on illness. She believes that both Spence and her father were asthmatic. Martin and Spence both explored their relationships with their fathers, in addition to their better-known work on their mothers. Spence only did one session on her father, from which this image originates. Additionally, Spence created still-life images to re-create memories of her father and self-portraits with an asthma inhaler (including one also in the Hyman Collection).
We are grateful to Rosy Martin for her asistance in cataloguing this work. Rosy Martin, email to James Hyman, 24 August 2020.
