In 1986 Jo Spence took part in a BBC Arena programme about Cinderella and outlined some of the areas she had explored in her epic thesis on Cinderella and Fairytales. In the programme she speaks of her photo therapy works of herself as a bride and also explains that she wished to address what happened after marraiage.
The Bride is a theme Spence returned to again and again.
Martin recalls that that the bride images in this work came from one of the very first photo therapy sessions (1984) whereas the image of Spence with a hoover comes from a much later Libido Uprising session (1989).The combining of these works by Spence was typical of the way she reused and repurposed her work. The "Bride" series was restaged for the Arena programme "Putting Ourselves in the Picture".
We are grateful to Rosy Martin for her assistance in cataloguing these works.
