This photograph was used as part of a photo story for Picture Post magazine on the life of a maid. ('The Perfect Parlourmaid', Picture Post, vol. 4, no. 4 (July 29, 1939), pp. 43-7. illustrated). On the verso in Brandt's own hand is the extended caption that he wished to appear alongside the work:
"No.2. Pratt the parlour maid wth underunder parlour maid arranges for the 'family's morning teas and breakfasts in bed. She knows the family's likes and dislikes regarding tea and she never forgets whether a visitor to the house prefers 'Indian' or 'China'."
