Early print. Probably c.1960

Rare example of this classic portrait, with extensive pencil overworking.

Titled and dated in ink on recto beneath image.

The present print is one of Bill Brandt's most extraordinary. In keeping with many of his works it Brandt enhanced it through the addition of pencil but the extent of over-working in this work has few rivals. It seems as though every single swirl of wood grain has been enhanced by Brandt who has covered a high percentage of the sculpture in rythmic curves.

A later print of this work is in the collection of MoMA, New York.
