Charlotte ('Lallie') Charles was inspired by the success of Alice Hughes. She opened her first photographic studio in 1896, at The Nook in Regent's Park, London. Along with her sister Rita Martin, Lallie became the most commercially successful women portraitists of the first decade of the twentieth century.
The few surviving negatives of Rita Martin and Lallie Charles were given to the National Portrait Gallery by their niece Lallie Charles Martin in 1994.
