photograph by BERT HARDY
Taken by Bert Hardy in late 1954 for an article proposed for Picture Post magazine in 1955. These photographs follow the lives of the famous Bluebell Girls of the Lido in Paris. The troupe of exotic dancers was founded in 1948 by Irish-born Margaret Kelly, who appears in a number of Hardy's photographs, and who had a preference for British dancers. Grace Robertson had done a similar feature on the Bluebell Girls for Picture Post in 1952, which also showed the relaxed rapport between the photographer and the young women, perhaps accounting for the fact that Hardy's slightly later images went unpublished and remain little known.
