A Stranger in my Mother’s Kitchen is an exploration into the grieving process told through cooking my mother’s recipes after her death. The book of the series (published by Dewi Lewis and designed by Loose Joints in 2022) shares a universal story of loss whilst also celebrating a food legacy. My mother Sue Miles was a head chef for 40 years; described in her obituary in The Guardian as ‘the doyenne of the British restaurant revolution’ and was one of the first female head chefs in Britain.I spent over 5 years cooking her recipes, retracing her life and reconnecting with her, whilst working through this period of grief after her death.
Celine Marchbank is a British photographic artist and lecturer based in London. Her practice explores deeply personal stories told through the quiet details of everyday life, with a particular interest in home, family and domesticity.
