Graham Smith was born in 1947 in Middlesbrough. His family worked in heavy industry and his photographs document his local communty.
Having studied at Middlesborough College of Art and the Royal College of Art, London, Smith then exhibited alongside peers such as Chris Killip, at the Serpentine Gallery in 1985 in a joint show entitled 'Another Country' and then Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen at the Side Galery in 1994.
Smith's career as a photographer was relatively short spanning the later 1970s and the 1980s before he retired in 1990 to pursue a career in woodworking.
His work was included in the important exhibition, British Photography from the Thatcher Years, at the Museum of Modern Art, New York in 1990.
