Hoppé was a member of the Royal Photographic Society and The Linked Ring and considered one of England’s most influential photographers during the Edwardian period. Although born in Germany, he lived in London and photographed the city widely both before and after the First World War. This photograph was likely taken in London, but later in 1929 Hoppé travelled to India and Ceylon and then to Australia and New Zealand.
