"Whether aspirational or matter of fact, signs provide a reliable 'lifestyle' barometer. Great examples can be found in areas undergoing regeneration where unusual juxtapositions and contradictions are commonplace. Some of our favourite signs represent a disconnect between dream and reality, particularly with regard to the language of marketing and advertising. We are constantly bombarded with billboards and signs instructing us to have fun and enjoy ourselves. Britain is traditionally a nation of shopkeepers and small often idiosyncratic enterprises, many of whom resent being told what to do by the powers that be. Many of our images celebrate the efforts of individuals who prefer to do things in their own way with wit, their own brand of humour and a fondness for wordplay."
